Candle

An unlit candle.

A lit candle.

Nine Candles can be found throughout the world. Initially they are all unlit, but can be lit by using a Match. Lighting up all nine candles opens a Gate. A lit candle provides some light and also prevents aggressive Blue Ghosts from spawning.

The candle gate room has a grid of candles in the wall. Every time the player lights a candle, one candle in the grid illuminates in a predetermined order, starting with the upper right grid cell:

1. Where the first Blue Ghost is encountered (the one on the right in the starting area).
2. A room filled with bones, in the dog area in the upper left zone of the map, to its right there is a room with a large body of water.
3. In the dog area in the upper left zone of the map. Past the tunnels the purple dog cannot get into. You'll eventually run across it a few rooms in.
4. In the dog area in the upper left zone of the map. There is maze with Toggle Blocks. Throw the Disc between the two Switches to navigate the maze and light the candle. There is a match in a chest in the same maze on the left side.
5. In the lizard area, to the left of the room with the seven Porcupines.
6. In the mouse area, in a road at a crossroads. It is just above a ladder that comes up from the room at the bottom.
7. In the dog area, from the grass bowl room, go down one and go left twice. It is in the lower left corner of the room.
