Dog

A generic dog.

Dogs are hostile animals unless distracted. All dogs seemingly love Discs and will try to catch them over attacking the player. They also like other tools like the Top and can be equally distracting for them. Distracted dogs deal no damage to the player and can be safely passed through.

Variants

Ghost Dog

The Ghost Dog is an especially hostile phantom dog that materializes and actively follows and attacks the player for stealing the Disc from its pedestal. The Ghost Dog damages the player if they make contact with its head, while phasing through surfaces and following the player everywhere they move (but cannot teleport). It can be prevented from appearing if the disc or mock disc is placed in the disc pedestal. However, it disappears permanently if the player places the mock disc at the M. disc shrine, defeating it and granting access to the P. Flame.

Though many players see this animal as a cat, it is officially a dog. Steam achievement for finding the P. Flame has ID DEFEAT_GHOST_DOG.[1] Billy Basso posted in Animal Well Discord:[2]

also fun fact! I was trying to draw a dog, but almost everyone has interpreted it as a cat

On an episode of the The Duel Screens Podcast Billy Basso explained how the Ghost Dog is an example of intentionally breaking a rule already established during earlier gameplay. Other enemies leave the player alone once the player leaves the screen, but the ghost dog breaks this rule.[3]

Dig Dog

This dog can follow you into narrow tunnels.

The Dig Dog or Daschund can follow the player into narrow one-tile wide tunnels, unlike the other dogs who will only bark and claw at tunnel entry points.
